    Certificate Presentation Evening 2017

We welcomed back the Year 11 ’Class of 2017’ to our annual Certificate Presentation Evening on Wednesday 22 November. Our former students were awarded a range of prizes for progress, achievement, endeavour and attendance. All students were publically awarded their certificates and it was great to welcome them back to Aldworth and find out how they are getting on.

We were delighted to welcome Graham Edmunds as our Guest of Honour. Graham holds two Paralympic gold medals for swimming: One for the S10 4 x 50m freestyle relay at the Athens Games in 2004 and the other successfully defending the title in the Beijing Games in 2008. Graham brought his medals along with him to show us and provided us with a motivational talk that was an inspiration to all. We were pleased that Graham was also able to present some awards to students and pose for photographs.

Graham attended a Question & Answer Session with some of our current Year 11 students before the evening celebrations began. During that session students heard about Graham’s accident and how he overcame significant barriers to be able to walk again, unsurprisingly he used swimming in his rehabilitation regime. Graham also officially opened The Aldworth Learning Centre ‘Flexi-Pod’: a resource that is providing some of our students with additional support.

Our headline figures for 2017 are that 63% of students achieved 5 or more A*-C GCSE grades including English and Mathematics (Grade 4+). Whilst these are super headlines for the school they come from each individual student working to achieve his or her best. The individual performances of our young people matter most to us. They should be rightly proud of themselves and in the words of Nelson Mandella “Today’s young people are tomorrow’s leaders.” The strong partnerships we have between school, home and our students makes all the difference in developing our young people.

We had a lovely evening, thanks to everyone who was involved.

“We all enjoyed the evening and it was a delight to welcome back our students – they are a credit to their families, the school and most of all to themselves”

“Graham provided a motivational and interesting talk that delivered a powerful message. Having a successful, hard-working, role model who has had a personal battle to regain mobility was truly inspiring”

“The achievement of our students are the result of a huge team effort”
