Drama is an integral part of the Literacy Hour in primary school. At Aldworth School we build on students’ primary experience as part of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3. Drama is taught as a separate subject by qualified specialists.
The School is well equipped with a state of the art drama/dance studio. Specialist lighting and equipment are available in the teaching area and extend students’ experience of drama as an art form.
Drama is part of the Performing Arts Department. A broad range of activities take place as part of the extended curriculum. There are opportunities for students to take part in studio and whole School productions, whether musicals or dramatic plays. Trips are organised to the theatre for all year groups.  This also forms a key element of GCSE Drama.  The department has made links with local theatres, which students have the opportunity to perform at.
Our Drama Department at Aldworth is dedicated to the development and presentation of plays and musical theatre.
Our main focus is the development of “the whole child” making sure that we equip them with essential tools such as confidence, self-esteem and the ability to communicate with one another.
Every student, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to:
    • engage with different styles of theatre and play forms
    • create and perform plays to an audience
    • develop a critical vocabulary
    • learn about how a theatre works and how plays are produced
    • develop social and communication skills necessary for adult life
    • develop work as part of a team
    • develop the confidence necessary for presentation and performance
    Key Stage 4
Students can opt for Drama GCSE in Year 10. We follow the AQA exam syllabus.
The course can be designed around students’ individual needs. Students can opt to be assessed in technical elements of the course if they wish, such as lighting, sound or costume, and they will complete both a devised and scripted performance as part of the course.
Here at Aldworth the Performing Arts Department is hugely successful staging a school production bi-annually and we also have a thriving Drama Club at Key Stage 3 which allows students to develop the skills learnt in their lessons. This is led by GCSE students, providing great opportunities for student leadership within the department.
