    Product design: Mechanisms

    Year 7  Product Design: Mechanisms – Carnivals and Fairgrounds

    This project introduces students to systems and control through investigations and the making of a hand held Automata.

    Design and Make task

    Your challenge will be to use your research and technical knowledge to build a prototype automata with a carnival theme.

    Learning Objectives:

    In this project you will learn:

    • About different types of research and how they are used in the design process.
    • What INPUTS and OUTPUTS are.
    • About movement and mechanisms.
    • To solve design issues using your technical knowledge.
    • How to programme a Microprocessor.

    Year 8 Product Design: Electronics – Electronic dice game

     This project introduces students to electronic components, moulds and formers and soldering their own circuit board.

    Design and make task

    Your challenge will be to use your research and technical knowledge to make an electronic dice and suitable board game.

    Learning Objectives:

    In this project you will learn:

    • About a range of electronic components and their technical symbols.
    • What a resistor is and how to work out their values.
    • How to solder a simple circuit board.
    • About moulds and formers for creating the same product in quantity.
    • How to cost a product for manufacturing in quantity.
    • About a designer/inventor.

    Year 9 Product Design – Animatronics

    This project allows students to work with both the Design and Technology department and the ICT department to investigate different modelling materials, design challenges and programming.

    Challenges

    Term 1: will be to use your research and technical knowledge to solve a series of challenges whilst working as a team.

    Term 2: will be to use your knowledge from term 1 to design and make a prototype Animatronic based on a given Design Brief.

    Term 3: will be to use your knowledge from the first two terms to produce your own project with a final outcome.

    Learning Objectives:

    In the Design and Technology section of this project you will learn:

    • About different types of materials, their properties and uses.
    • The best ways to cut, fold and join a variety of materials.
    • How to solve design issues using your technical knowledge.
    • Programming of the BBC Microbit to operate small servo motors.
    • How to use your knowledge to make a prototype Animatronic.
