    Product design: Modelling

Year 7 Product design: Modelling – Communication device

This project introduces students to product design and the modelling of ideas. They will complete a variety of research and learn different designing and making skills to produce a quality prototype product

    Design and Make task

During the project students will design and make a prototype communication device.

    Learning Objectives:

During this unit you will learn:

    • How to work safely in the classroom.
    • How to draw a 3D object in isometric.
    • How to research a product idea.
    • How to create design ideas.
    • Why designers model.
    • How to paint Styrofoam to achieve a quality finish.

Year 8 Product design: modelling – Pencil sharpener

This project builds on the knowledge and skills from year 7 and introduces them to different drawing skills, using anthropometric data to inform designing and making.

    Design and Make task

During this unit students will design and make a prototype pencil sharpener.

    Learning objectives

During this unit you will learn:

    • How to work safely.
    • How to carry out research.
    • How to draw a 3D object in isometric.
    • How to produce an orthographic drawing for your final idea.
    • How to mark out and cut modelling materials.
    • How to recognise and use different grades of glass paper.
    • How to use anthropometric data to find average hand sizes.
    • How to paint Styrofoam to achieve a quality finish.
