Our curriculum is designed with the aspiration that every learner should leave the School fully qualified to enter the next phase of their education.  When students arrive in Year 7 they are taught in their tutor groups.  During years 8 and 9 the core subjects have 'accelerated' groups for the highest attaining pupils, the majority are taught in flexible groups.  We have a three year Key Stage 3, which is broad, balanced and supports personal and skills development as well as subject knowledge.  Pupils are assessed against Age Related Expectations in each subject, these are typically based on transferable skills and concepts which support learning  across the curriculum.  The value of reading and literacy are promoted throughout both key stages.

During Year 8 Autumn Term, Modern languages are taught on a rota of French, German and Spanish. Students are then asked to choose a specialism in the Year 8 Spring Term which will then give them an excellent grounding if they choose to take that language at GCSE. Pupils wishing to take two languages are accommodated on a flexible basis, for example through twilight study or a personalised timetable.

We have a broad and balanced selection of option subjects at Key Stage 4 including some ‘vocational’ subjects which we are fortunate to have the facilities to be able to offer.  We have a ‘guided options’ process in which the Tutors, Year Leaders and Senior Staff put in a considerable amount of effort ensuring that students are taking courses that will meet their needs in the future.

English, Mathematics and Science are at the core of the Key Stage 4 curriculum.  Even within these compulsory subjects we have some choices.  English Literature, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are all possibilities.

The timetable plans below show a typical curriculum offer as an example.  This will vary according to year group and choices made.

    Timetable Plan

There are 30 fifty minute periods per week.  Therefore the school spends 25 hours per week on teaching, excluding assemblies, registration periods and breaks.  The Government recommends a minimum of 24 hours.  We also run enhancement lessons after school.
