Art

If your child is at all artistic and they would like to explore their ideas and develop their skills through working with teachers who truly believe in the child-as-artist, then Aldworth School is the place for them!

It is our passion as artists to develop our students’ creativity and the department is often praised for the vibrant and adventurous work on display and for the wide-ranging courses we offer our students. Everything we do, from Year 7 to 11, is focused on developing a highly personalised approach to the creation of art.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum

Year 7 – students learn the essential skills of art practice through exploration of the Formal Elements (line, tone, shape, form, colour, texture, pattern)

Year 8 – students explore the artwork of world cultures and develop their knowledge of, and skills in handling, a range of media via the theme, ‘Cultural Enquiry’

Year 9 – The course runs along the lines of the GCSE and work produced during the year can be submitted for the full GCSE if students choose it as their option. Students study three work-related themes under the umbrella title, ‘Colours in Art’:

  1. The Colours of Communication – Graphic Design
  2. The Colours of Construction – Interior Design and Architecture
  3. The Colours of the Land, the Sea and the Sky – Abstract Use of Colour.

Each theme gives students the chance to explore different aspects of Art on different scales and in two and three dimensions.

The Key Stage 4 curriculum

Year 10 & 11 – GCSE Art & Design – students follow OCR’s broad-based Art, Craft and Design course, which gives them the very best chance of developing their practical art skills while exploring a highly personalised curriculum. Students comment on how much they enjoy the way the course is structured and are often surprised and delighted by the progress they make.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have 1 lesson a week in which to study Art & Design. Students at KS4 have three lessons a week in which to deepen their knowledge and understanding of art, develop their practical skills and explore their responses with insight and inspiration.

All Art Department staff contribute strongly to the breadth, depth and richness of the courses we have on offer. The department is led by Ms Hide, a professional artist in her own right.
