Modern Languages

Key Stage 3: Years 7, 8 & 9

In the Modern Foreign Languages Department, our mission is to help create global citizens with a passion for language learning.

Students in Year 7 will study French or German/Spanish, following the Studio or Echo course respectively, and various interactive and ICT teaching resources.  In addition to this, they will also learn a range of transferable study skills.  These will help them improve both in their progress in the language they study and also in other subject areas.  We believe that studying only one language from Year 7 through until the end of Year 9 will provide them with a good foundation when they opt for a language at GCSE level.

In Key Stage 3 equal emphasis will be given to the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The majority of the lessons will be in the target language and students are encouraged to develop an understanding of the country’s culture, traditions and people.  All language learning has access to a variety of interactive and on-line resources and authentic resources are made a focus of the teaching and learning whenever possible.

Foreign Language Trips

There is a KS3 trip to France or Germany on offer to students, which takes place during the summer term.

Key Stage 4: Years 10 & 11

Students of all abilities, who opt to do a language in Year 10, will follow the AQA GCSE course in French, German or Spanish and are given opportunities to experience relevant foreign language situations.

This is a two-year course leading to GCSE certification at the end of Year 11 when candidates are tested in all skills; listening, reading, speaking and writing. All of these assessments take the form of external examinations.  As there has been a shift in the new GCSE to external examinations instead of coursework elements, even greater importance is placed on the completion of homework and revision tasks, in order to improve performance.

In Year 10 students complete a mock examination in order to help them prepare for the final GCSE examination in Year 11.

Foreign Language Trips

Year 10 German students may have the opportunity to travel to Berlin as part of a cross-curricular project with History.
